The benefits for pre-planning a funeral are as
personal and varied as life itself. These may include:
- To relieve grieving relatives of responsibility and any unnecessary
hardships;
- To become familiar with the many options, requirements and services
available;
- To feel secure knowing that all details relating to one's funeral
are documented;
- To personalize one's own funeral service, thus knowing his or her
wishes will be fulfilled;
- To choose a funeral home;
- To record vital information that might otherwise remain unknown;
- To complete an estate plan or the final details of a Last Will and
Testament.
Third Party Arrangements
It is not uncommon for
persons terminally ill or incapacitated to have their funeral
preplanned by a third party (executor, next-of-kin, legal
representative or friend) with, or in many cases, without their
knowledge. This reduces the emotional strain of having to make
arrangements at short notice.
In a case where the subject
of preplanning arrangements is in poor health and is unable to sign any
documentation, then the third party should clearly identify to the
Funeral Director his or her relationship to the subject, and his or her
authority to make such arrangements.
