Frank Fortino Vargas, Sr., 86, of Chouteau, Oklahoma, passed away on Sunday, April 6, 2014 in Pryor, Oklahoma. He was born on June 1, 1927 in Dewey, Oklahoma; the son of Remigo Vargas and Juanna (Heredia) Vargas. Frank faithfully served his Country in the United States Navy. He volunteered for World War II at age 17; his mother had to sign for him to join. He spent 2-3 years on USS Volcan, and then transferred to a tanker ship, which fueled ships out at sea. After which, he was on the USS Redstart, then the Korean War as a minesweeper. He married Dora East in 1975 in Miami, Florida. She preceded him in death in 2012. He worked most of his life as a maintenance supervisor in various cement plants. Frank enjoyed being outdoors, especially when he was going fishing. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge in Tulsa and the Pryor Elks Lodge. He loved to be surrounded by those he loved and cherished each moment he had to spend with them. He will be remembered by all the wonderful memories he leaves behind and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in the Southside Christian Church in Pryor with Reverend K.E. Gerhart officiating. Interment will be in the Graham Memorial Cemetery with Jason Wood, Jerod Wood, Tyler Wood, Trey Vargas, Jeremy Vargas, and Ryan Vargas serving as casket bearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesday, April 8, 2014 in the Shipman's Funeral Home Chapel. He is survived by his children, Frank Vargas Jr. and wife, Mildred of Pryor, Oklahoma, Anthony "Dink" Vargas and wife, Cheryl of Pryor, Oklahoma; Mary Vargas of Pryor, Oklahoma, Frances Vargas of Pryor, Oklahoma and Terrie Hollis of Pryor, Oklahoma; Brothers, Tony and wife Maggie Vargas of Dewey, Oklahoma, John and wife Margaret Vargas of Woodland, California and Spencer Vargas of Woodland, California; sisters, Librada Gonzales of Sacramento, California and Mary and husband Milford Martin of Sacramento, California; 9 grandchildren; 23 Great Grandchildren; many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Remigo and Juanna Vargas; wife, Dora Vargas; and several brothers and sisters.
