Listen to Obituary

H.W. “Chief” Jordan, a lifelong resident of Pryor, Oklahoma, was born in Pryor and graduated from Pryor High School in 1959, where he was a standout football player. His commitment to his hometown never faded, and over the years he became one of the most familiar and trusted figures in local public service.

After high school, Jordan attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M (NEO) and Central State College, continuing his football career. He also proudly served his country with honorable service in the United States Marine Corps for two years, followed by 30 years of service in the National Guard.

Jordan devoted decades to serving his community through law enforcement and city leadership. He served as Mayor of Pryor Creek from 1975 to 1983 and again from 1999 to 2003, Sheriff of Mayes County from 1985 to 1989, and many years as a deputy sheriff under Sheriff Berry and Sheriff Cantey. He also served as Chief of Police in Adair and later as a Student Resource Officer, retiring in 2022.

The Mayes County Sheriff’s Office stated, “Chief Jordan dedicated his life to public service, proudly serving the City of Pryor Creek and Mayes County for decades… His leadership, integrity, and commitment to this community left a lasting impact that will not be forgotten.”

Outside of public service, Jordan enjoyed traveling to Colorado with his brother, playing poker with friends, watching western movies, and cheering on his favorite team, OSU. He was active in Grace Life Church and especially loved attending his grandchildren’s events.

Jordan is survived by his daughter, Tobie Cooper and husband Craig of Adair, Oklahoma; sister, Lou Hartin of Sapulpa, Oklahoma; seven grandchildren, Blade Jordan, Max Jordan, Nick Jordan, Chancie Crabtree, Chasee Cooper, Canyon Sawney, and Jaden Jordan; six great-grandchildren, Quentin Crabtree, Kennedi Crabtree, Atticus Jordan, Ansleigh Jordan, and Addaline Jordan; and many other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Barrie Marie Jordan; his mother, Bertha Garrison; his son, Tim Jordan; and his brothers, Don Jordan and Johnny Jordan.
