Leta (Kinion) Mathis

April 9, 1935 — December 31, 2020

Leta Mae (Kinion) Mathis, 85, of Pryor, passed away on Thursday, December 31, 2020 at her home. She was born on April 9, 1935 in Strang, Oklahoma; the daughter of Edward “Ed” and Meoma Athalee Kinion. She married Jerry Lee Mathis on June 7, 1953 near Strang in the Greenbrier Freewill Baptist Church. She had lived in the Mayes county area all of her life, except when Jerry was in the military, they had moved to different towns during his service.  Leta worked for many years as a store clerk for Donna’s Quick Shop and also for Duane and Barbara Fought in their Dry Cleaning Business. She was a strong Christian and loved her Lord. She was a member of the Heritage Southern Baptist Church in Pryor. Leta enjoyed attending church activities and she never met a stranger; she was always willing to help those in need. In her spare time, she loved to work crossword puzzles and to read. She leaves behind many memories for her family to remember.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 p.m., Monday, January 4, 2021 in the Benge Cemetery in Strang with Reverend Andy Pilant officiating. Casket Bearers will be Bryan Martin, Terry Lamar, Roy Hamill, Duane Fought, Tommy Myhand, and Tommy Kinion. Visitation will be held from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m., Sunday, January 3, 2021 at Shipman’s Funeral Home. To leave her family a message, please visit her Tribute Wall at www.shipmansfuneralhome.com. Leta is survived by her sons, Jerry Mathis of Pryor, Oklahoma, James Mathis and wife Roberta of Pryor, Oklahoma, and Jeffery Mathis and wife Sandra of Pryor, Oklahoma; brother, Jack Kinion and wife Norma of Adair, Oklahoma; sisters, Norma Erwin and husband Rexel of Pryor, Oklahoma and Linda Lamar of Pryor, Oklahoma; 11 grandchildren; 28 great grandchildren; numerous great great grandchildren; and many other relatives and friends. She is preceded in death by her parents, Ed and Athalee Kinion; husband, Jerry Mathis; daughters, Janice and Judy Mathis; brothers, Gerald Kinion, Donald Kinion, Bruce Kinion, Wayne Kinion, and infant brothers, Charles and Jimmy Kinion; and sister, Margie Ables.
