Norman "Skip" Helms, a beloved figure in both his family and the community, passed away on August 4, 2025, in Vinita, Oklahoma. Born on August 22, 1953, in San Diego, California, Skip dedicated his life to the craft of underwater recovery diving, finding purpose and fulfillment in what he fondly called "Helms Everything."
Skip's passion went beyond his profession; he had a profound love for adventure and the outdoors. He cherished diving at his favorite spots, Grand Lake and Panama City. His enthusiasm for life was reflected in his many interests, including woodworking, porch sitting, taking long drives "cruises", and the joyful experience of boating, especially driving the boat.
Skip is survived by his significant other, Di Anna Woodruff of Ketchum, Oklahoma; his son, Steven and wife Bobbie Helms of Adair, Oklahoma; and his daughter, Fawnyia Helms of Vinita, Oklahoma. He was a proud grandfather to Sonilyn Young, Skip Helms, Brooklynn Helms, Hunter Helms, Stephanie and Aaron Schlager. Delighted in the company of his great-grandchildren, Dezmond Schlager and Lailah Schlager. Skip is also survived by his sister Rila Geraldine (Helms) Duckworth of Cushing, Oklahoma and brother, William Helms, of Locust Grove, Oklahoma.
Skip was preceded in death by his father and mother, who instilled in him the values of hard work and perseverance that he carried throughout his life. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, remembered for his adventurous spirit, love for family, and the laughter he shared.
