Orvel Eugene Ballew Jr., born on October 20, 1963, in Richmond, California, passed away on July 26, 2025, in Tulsa, Oklahoma. He was a man of strong character and dedication, known for his warmth, humor, and love of family.
Orvel graduated from Pryor High School as a member of the Class of 1982 and went on to serve his country honorably in the United States Marine Corps. After his military service, he became a valued member of the Steelworkers Union 8511, where he worked for over 20 years at Pryor Foundry. Orvel's commitment to his work was evident, and he transitioned to become the Security Supervisor at Creek Nation Gaming, a position that showcased his leadership and dedication to his community.
He had a profound appreciation for the great outdoors and committed much of his free time to fishing and golfing, reflecting his love for nature. Orvel was also known for his passion for junk collecting, always on the lookout for treasures that others might overlook. His engaging personality extended beyond his hobbies—he was known for his ability to tell stories and share famous movie quotes, which brought joy to those around him.
Orvel's heart was as expansive as his interests; he continually sought ways to help those in need. Recently, he spearheaded fundraisers for the Angel Tree project, demonstrating his belief in lifting the spirits of others through service and kindness.
He is survived by his son, Trey Ballew, and wife Dawn of Tulsa, OK, his daughter, Katy Ballew of Tulsa, OK, his brother, John Ballew, and wife Lori of Pryor, OK, sister, Linda Kay Sylva of Washington; and sister-in-law, Pat Cantey of Pryor, OK. Orvel took great joy in being a grandfather and is lovingly remembered by his granddaughters, Ashlee Sky Ballew, Jaiyana Simmons, Aariyana Simmons, Kayiana Simmons, and his grandson, Cayden Simmons. He also leaves behind the mother of his children, Carlene Ballew, his girlfriend, Misty Goad, and a host of other family and friends who will forever cherish his memory.
Orvel was preceded in death by his wife, Melissa Brandon; his parents, Orvel and Doris Ballew; and his brothers, Frank Cantey, and wife Linda, and Robert Cantey. His legacy of love, generosity, and commitment to family will continue to inspire those who knew him.
A memorial visitation for Orvel will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, July 30, 2025, at Shipman's Funeral Home in Pryor.
