Woody Briggs

Woodrow Junior (Woody) Briggs, born on August 20, 1938, in Tucson, Arizona, to Woodrow Hercel (Hershel) Briggs and Jewell Elizabeth Dill-Briggs, passed away on May 7, 2024 of natural causes. The family, originally from Oklahoma, moved to Arizona during the Depression, then returned to Mayes County, Oklahoma, where Woody spent most of his life.

Woody, who had an older brother, Billy Gene, and a younger sister, Phyllis Marie, attended high school in Pryor, Oklahoma. He married Freda Plumlee and had three children: Darrell, Douglas, and Tracey. After his divorce in 1972, Woody met Glenda Sue Gifford, who became his second wife and a significant part of his life for over 40 years.

Woody worked in various local jobs before securing a position with Mayes County District 2, where he retired at age 62. An avid reader of Western novels, Woody enjoyed traveling, fishing, and spending time with his family in his later years.

He is survived by his son Darrell and wife Cheryl of Skiatook; daughter Tracey and husband Steve Langston of Rose; grandchildren Colby Briggs and his wife Alexis, Tonya Harris and her husband Ben, and Dylan Briggs; and three great-grandchildren, Julian Baldino, Jordan Houston, and Scarlet Briggs; and niece Rhonda Freeman-Reynolds.

Woody was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, and son Doug. In accordance with his wishes, no service will be held. Woody's life was marked by his enduring ties to family and friends, and his legacy continues through his descendants.
