Johnny Max Phipps, 76, of Pryor, passed away on Sunday, May 8, 2022 in Claremore, Oklahoma. He was born on September 8, 1945 in Pryor, Oklahoma; the son of Elmer and Marybelle (Pullum) Phipps. He graduated from Pryor High School in the Class of 1963 and went on to faithfully serve his country in the United States Air Force. He served from 1964 until 1968 and was honorably discharged at the McChord Air Force Base in Tacoma, Washington. Johnny worked for the Lonestar Cement Plant in Pryor, and after went to work as a Power Station Mechanic for GRDA where he retired.  He was a true outdoorsman who loved every minute of hunting and fishing, and many times, loved telling his family he would be coming home at “Dark Thirty.” He was known by many of his friends and family as a “MacGyver,” always knowing how to fix almost anything that they would bring to him. He leaves behind many wonderful memories and will be missed by all who knew and loved him.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, May 12, 2022 in the Shipman’s Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will follow in the Bryan Chapel Cemetery (Boatman Cemetery) with Ricky Knowles, Phoenix Ryan, Cub Yeager, Boomer Simpson, Russ Overstreet and Jackie James serving as casket bearers. Honorary casket bearers will be Doug Green, Jared Spurgeon, Ethan Higgins, and Luke Higgins. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Wounded Warrior Project at support.woundedwarriorproject.org  Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, May 11, 2022 at Shipman’s Funeral Home in Pryor. Johnny is survived by his wife, Sandra Phipps of the home; daughters, Kathryn Demaree and husband Rodney of Pryor, Oklahoma and Emily Link and husband Thomas of Strang, Oklahoma; their mother, Donna Jacobs of Pryor, Oklahoma; daughter, Stephanie Higgins of Chouteau, Oklahoma; 6 grandchildren, Travis Link, Makayla Roberts and husband Dakota, Cheyenne Demaree, Dakota Demaree,  Ethan Higgins, and Luke Higgins; 3 great grandchildren, Silas Link, Brooklynn Roberts, and Kylee Roberts; sister, Hazel Williams and husband Bill of Arizona; and many other relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elmer and Marybelle Phipps; 2 brothers, Norman and Roy; and 3 sisters, Marion, Helen and Terry.
